Our History
R. Maharaj & Company was founded in 1983 by Principal Attorney R. Maharaj. With a commitment to service excellence, the firm quickly specialized in litigation, conveyancing, and administration of deceased estates. This dedication led to rapid growth, expansion into Chatsworth as well as Phoenix, and recognition from prominent South African banks.
A highlight in our history was receiving Nedcor Bank Ltd’s Attorney of the Year Award and Merit Award in 1992 – a unique distinction for our firm. Our unwavering standards have been instrumental in shaping industry practices, including leading amendments to the KwaZulu-Natal Law Society’s fair practice rules.

RASHMIKA MAHARAJ
LLB (UKZN) | DIRECTOR
Highly experienced in the fields of administration of deceased estates, conveyancing and debt collection, she is also an all- round general practitioner and prides herself on in-depth legal knowledge, and her willingness to go the extra mile for all her clients. Her unparralled ethics, professionalism and fast turnaround times have ensured that the company continues to grow under her expert leadership.
SANDRA MAHARAJ
FOUNDER
Sandra is the founding member of the company, and has, for the past three decades, been instrumental in the daily operations of the company, internal staff training and for the empowerment of staff. She is a conveyancing specialist, and has trained many of the attorneys in this field, who now operate in the Durban area. Sandra is semi-retired, and focusses her efforts on empowerment, especially uplifting staff who wish to pursue a career in the field of law, with bursaries and tutoring.
LUTCHMEE NORMAN (aka Rajanee)
LLB (UNISA) | ATTORNEY/CONVEYANCER
Lutchmee began her career at the company on 21 October 1992, and is one of the longest-serving members of staff. She specialises in conveyancing, having been specially-groomed for the position under the tutorlage of Sandra Maharaj. She began her career as a receptionist, and was promoted to secretary, then to conveyancing secretary and finally, to conveyancing paralegal secretary, having earned this position in 2004. She studied under the company bursary towards her law degree. She is now a Qualified Attorney and Conveyancer, specializing in Registration of Bonds, Transfers, Deceased Estates, Trusts, and Leads the conveyancing department.
CHORNE GOVENDER
CONVEYANCING PARALEGAL
Chorne started her career with the company on 20 February 2007 as a receptionist attending to general administrative duties and within two years was promoted to conveyancing secretary. Her portfolio now includes the drafting of Last Will and Testament documents, cancellations of Mortgage Bonds and administrative duties as well as Administration of Deceased Estate and registration of Transfers. In 2017 she was trained on all management systems for banks and other financial service providers, so that she can continue to offer the best and most efficient service experience possible. Sixteen years after her appointment at the company, she has progressed to Conveyancing Paralegal and is a specialist at conveyancing.
SHAE BERNELEE GOVENDER
CONVEYANCING SECRETARY
Shae began her career at the company on 6 February 2019 as a receptionist, but her drive and passion soon saw her attending to additional duties pertaining to conveyancing. A quick learner, efficient and forward-thinking, she has now advanced to a Conveyancing Secretary and currently attends to Bond registration and Bond Cancellation for various Institutions, some of her additional tasks also includes , consulting with clients, preparation of Title deeds to send to bond, transferring attorneys and clients, attends to debtors and creditors advertisements, creates Liquidation and Distribution adverts in the Post newspaper and in the Government Gazette. She also liaises with the Masters Office and is well versed in preparing Last Will and Testament documents and Estate reporting documents.
NWABISA SAMELA
CONVEYANCING SECRETARY
Nwabisa began her career at the company as a Conveyancing Secretary, she is self driven and passionate person. Attends to additional duties pertaining to conveyancing. A quick learner, efficient and hard worker. She currently attends to the preparation of Title deeds to send to bond registration attorneys as well to preparing Bonds to the respective financial institutions and filing, general administration duties, attends to debtors and creditors advertisements, creates Liquidation and Distribution adverts in the Post and in the Government Gazette. She also draft and prepares Last Will and Testament.
KWAZI KHUZWAYO
CONVEYANCING SECRETARY
Kwazi’s is a conveyancing secretary with 5 year’s experience in the legal field. He has a dedicated and versatile knowledge in the legal field with expertise across multiple domains. He began his journey in the field of litigation and civil work, driven by passion for continuous growth and learning he then started with R Maharaj & Company to transition to the conveyancing and deceased estate department.
RAZIA KHAN
CONVEYANCING SECRETARY
Razia has been a Coneyancing Secretary since 2017. She is a quick learner, efficient and always willing to help others. She currently attends to drafting of Transfer documents, liaising with Various Attorneys in respect of Bond Cancellation, Bond Registrations and Clients. She also drafts out Last Will and Testaments as well as Estate reporting documents. Since Razia has started at R Maharaj and Co Inc she her knowledge in Conveyancing has developed which gives her the opportunity to better herself in the Conveyancing field.
